A rheumatologist is a specialist physician who has expertise in diagnosing and treating diseases of joints, muscles and bones. Sometimes the term rheumatic disease is used to describe this group of diseases. The more common rheumatic diseases include:

Rheumatologists also specialise in the treatment of chronic fatigue sufferers, who can demonstrate a range of rheumatic disorders. There are also a number of rarer rheumatic conditions that can affect other parts of the body including the skin, hair and internal organs. These include "lupus", myositis, vasculitis and scleroderma.

Dr Daniel Lewis

Rheumatologist

Dr Daniel Lewis is a Specialist Rheumatologist and Consultant Physician based at Brighton (private practice) and at the Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne. His area of special interest is in treating individuals, with safe non-drug treatment options wherever possible. These treatments include lifestyle change especially in the areas of nutrition, specific exercise programmes and stress management. In addition to his work as a Rheumatologist (as specialist in arthritis, bone and joint diseases) he has given lectures, workshops and led retreats both in Australia and overseas on various aspects of whole person care. He is on the Senior Medical Staff at Monash Medical Centre and is an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Medicine and the Centre for Complementary Medicine at Monash University. He is the director of a hospital-based musculoskeletal pain management programme available for people requiring intense treatment. He is a Past President of the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria and the director of the Lewis Institute, an organization whose aim is to empower individuals through education, training and research to achieve maximal levels of health and well being.
