Hydrotherapy is exercise rehabilitation conducted in water under the supervision of an experienced physiotherapist.
The anti-gravity effect and warmth of the water makes hydrotherapy useful in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, including osteoarthritis, inflammatory joint disease, fibromyalgia and chronic pain. Hydrotherapy is also an important part of the rehabilitation of early fracture management and joint replacement surgery. The water’s cushioning effect allows resistance for maintaining strength and fitness, as well as increasing speed and endurance.
The physiotherapist will provide a ‘water based’ exercise program which complements ‘land based’ therapy, to enhance and maximise recovery.
The benefits of hydrotherapy include:
- Increases mobility, strength and co-ordination
- Decreases swelling and pain
- Maintains strength and fitness
Brighton Spine and Sports Clinic conducts Hydrotherapy classes at the Brighton Swim School, adjacent to the clinic premises.
A physiotherapy assessment is required at Brighton Spine and Sports Clinic prior to commencing hydrotherapy. For patients with private health insurance, Hicaps facilities are available for on the spot physiotherapy rebates. Veteran Affairs, workcover and TAC may also cover hydrotherapy physiotherapy treatment fees.
