Balance and Falls

Balance and Falls Prevention in Brighton

Regain Your Confidence, Maintain Your Independence.

At Brighton Spine & Sports Clinic, we understand that feeling unsteady or experiencing a fall can be a significant turning point in your confidence. However, balance is a skill that can be trained and improved.

Our evidence-based programs are designed to help you move more safely, reduce your risk of injury, and keep you active in the community. Depending on your needs, you can work with our exercise-based Physiotherapists or our Clinical Exercise Physiologist.

Why Focus on Balance?

Falls are a leading cause of injury-related hospitalisations in Australia, but research shows they are largely preventable.

  • The Power of Exercise: Research indicates that completing targeted balance and strength exercise can reduce your risk of falling by up to 42%.

  • Long-Term Independence: Maintaining your stability is the key to continuing the activities you love, from walking in the park to managing daily tasks at home.

Meet Our Specialists

We offer a collaborative approach to balance care, ensuring you see the right practitioner for your specific stage of recovery or prevention.

Emily Green – Exercise-Based Physiotherapist

Emily holds a Master of Applied Science and specialises in dizziness and vestibular disorders. She is the ideal choice if your balance issues are related to:

  • Vertigo or BPPV: Specific “inner ear” retraining to stop dizziness.

  • Neurological Concerns: Addressing complex stability issues.

Helen Goldschmiedt – Clinical Exercise Physiologist

With over 20 years of experience, Helen specialises in helping patients who feel limited by pain, injury, or medical conditions. She is particularly passionate about:

  • Restoring Confidence: Helping those who have developed a “fear of movement” after a fall.

  • Bone Health & Balance: Tailoring programs for those with Osteoporosis or Osteopenia to improve stability and bone density.

  • Personalised Progression: Using a “progressive overload” approach to safely build the strength needed to prevent future falls.

Our Evidence-Based Approach

Whether you see Emily or Helen, your journey begins with a 1-on-1 consultation in our state-of-the-art clinical gymnasium.

  1. Comprehensive Assessment: We evaluate your gait, leg strength, and sensory systems to identify exactly why you feel unsteady.

  2. Individualised Programs: No “one size fits all.” Your program is designed around your medical history, medications, and personal goals.

  3. Supervised Training: We ensure every exercise is performed with the correct technique, helping you rebuild a healthy and confident relationship with movement.

Is This Program Right for You?

We recommend an initial assessment if you:

  • Are over the age of 70.

  • Have a history of one or more falls in the past year.

  • Feel unsteady on your feet or have a fear of falling.

  • Have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis or Osteopenia.
